A proposal was written for the development and implementation of a Resource Management Plan (RMP) for the Navajo Indian Irrigation Project (NIIP) and NAPI. The goal of Navajo Nation (NN) Dept Fish & Wildlife and NIIP/NAPI was to design and implement a Resource Management Plan (RMP) that adequately satisfies the need to develop and enhance all resources of the NIIP/NAPI to their fullest capacity. This RMP will be specifically geared toward a special emphasis on the environmental and economic development of fish and wildlife habitats and recreational resources in a cost efficient manner and consistent with the primary function and economic viability of the NIIP/NAPI projects as agricultural resources. NAPI participates in the Wildlife Habitat Incentive Program (WHIP) via Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS). With a cost sharing budget approved in 2005, plans started by transplanting game birds including pheasants (mutant, ringneck) and chukkar quail in proposed sites. Areas with ponds and access to water via side roll systems will be rehabilitated and native grasses, shrubs and forage for game birds, waterfowl and big game will be planted for their needs. |
